Week 14

SKETCHES AND SPECIFICATIONS🔍

Since in last week's lesson we did the presentation on the Operating Principles and Mechanism of our chemical device, we took Dr Noel's advice and modify it. Thus, in this week's lesson, it's about Product Sketch!! How cool right! Never thought we would learn how to sketch in this course.

Firstly, we started with drawing 2 points around 15cm apart and try drawing from one point to another, without moving our wrist. Followed by 3 points joining into a curve, then circles between 2 horizontal lines and ellipse between 2 vertical lines. Repeating all sketch 5 times.

1. One point perspective

- Drawing has a single vanishing point, usually directly opposite the viewer's eye and usually an the horizontal line.

- All lines parallel with the viewer's line of sight recede to the horizon towards this vanishing point

- Example of one point perspective sketch:

2. Two point perspective

- 2 vanishing points that represent 2 convergence points and infinite distance away.

 - All geometric objects that are arranged perpendicular or parallel to each other will have drawn side that converge on each vanishing point.

 - Example of two point perspective sketch:

Next, we go on to Design Specifications!

What is Design Specifications?
  • A set of documented requirements to be satisfied by a material, design, product, or service.
  • It is a common preliminary part of any engineering design and product development process.
  • Provides product design teams with the information they need to build out new features or functionality pf a product.
What makes a GOOD Design Specifications?
  • Allows product designers to answer the following questions:
    • What are we building?
    • What should the final build achieve?
    • How do we measure success?
At the preliminary design stage, we focus on:
  1. Material
  2. Functional/Performance Specifications
For our group, this was what we came up with for our chemical product:
